Every year, TCM Fellowship joins up with the UT Office of Service Learning and Community Engagement to sponsor a set of Alternative Spring Break trips, where students forego the usual vacation plans in order to travel to various parts of the United States and/or Mexico to do community service.

Past trips include Gulf Coast Hurricane Relief, a Native American cultural immersion, a Poverty Immersion, and a Personal Challenge Experience.

All trips are alcohol- and substance-free, and usually cost only $250.00 - $300.00 and participation in two Savage Hall cleaning fundraisers.

"Discovering the Four Corners"

  1. "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" - The Appalachian Trail

This will be a personal challenge trip where students will be challenged physically, backpacking upwards of 20 miles per day. Everything that students will need for the week will be on their backs and they will be pitching camp each night on the trail.

  2. "Take a Bite Out of the Big Apple" - New York, NY

On this urban immersion trip, students will be learning about homelessness, hunger, and other urban issues.

  3. "Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires" - Packwood, WA

On this trip, students will be working with Americorps volunteers to do a variety of things. Activities may include doing trail maintenance in the national forests and environmental development. Students may also have the opportunity to volunteer in a local teen center and work with youth.

  4. "Climbing Mountains" Ghost Ranch - Abiquiu, NM

This "personal challenge" trip will be all about students reaching new limits. Ghost Ranch is a 20,000 acre facility owned by the Presbyterian Church. Our goal is to build a new facility on the ranch as well as do some activities such as rock climbing and cross country skiing.

  5. "School House Rock" McCurdy School - Espanola Valley, NM

The McCurdy School is a small compound in the Espanola Valley of New Mexico that teaches conflict resolution to Native American and Hispanic children. Students will help to do maintenance work on the school buildings as well as have a chance to interact with students.

  6. "See Ya Later, Alligator" - Everglades, FL

On this trip to southern Florida, students will have the opportunity to do some trail maintenance and environmental work in the nation’s only subtropical national preservation. Other opportunities may include doing work in a state park that is partially underwater as a coral reef.

  7. "Third Time's a Charm" - Cameron, LA

This area of Louisiana was affected by Hurricane Rita several years ago. This will be the 3rd of the 5 years of support promised by the University of Toledo.

  8. "Swept Away" - Bay St. Louis, MS

This is one of the areas that was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The University of Toledo has also pledged 5 years of support to this area and students will be returning again this year to help rebuild homes for flood victims.
